CPA celebrates new UN Framework on Chemicals

“Target D3 – By 2030, the private sector, including the finance sector, incorporates strategies and policies to implement the sound management of chemicals and waste in its finance approaches and business models and applies internationally recognized or equivalent reporting standards.”

“Target D6 – By 2030, sustainable chemical and waste management strategies have been developed and implemented for major economic and industry sectors that identify priority chemicals of concern and standards and measures, such as the chemical footprint approach, to reduce their impact and, where feasible, their input along the value chain.”

For the past year, Clean Production Action’s (CPA’s) Angela Pinilla, Program Manager, Chemical Footprint Project (CFP) and Alexandra McPherson, Director, Investor Environmental Health Network (IEHN) worked collaboratively with leaders from around the world to support the development of precedent setting 2030 and 2025 targets in the United Nation’s new Global Chemical Framework on Chemicals.

Specifically, CPA focused on strengthening stakeholder engagement and solutions referenced in Targets D3 and D6 to insure the ultimate elimination of pollution from our economies and societies globally.

“Clean Production Action set the bold goals of a 50% reduction in chemical footprints by 2030 and zero by 2040. We look forward to working with downstream users of chemicals to set and track progress to bold goals to achieve Target D6, such as Reckitt’s 65% chemical footprint reduction by 2030,” said Angela Pinilla, PhD, Program Manager, Chemical Footprint Project.

“For over a decade, asset managers in the Investor Environmental Health Network have positively impacted corporate policy on chemical management and the transition to safer, more sustainable chemistry solutions. Their leadership will drive the momentum needed to achieve 2030 goals for the finance sector set in Target D3,” said Alexandra McPherson, Director, Investor Environmental Health Network

The Framework calls for stakeholders -- including businesses, asset managers, banks, private equity, nonprofits, academia, intergovernmental organizations, and governments – to work together to scale solutions in clean production, safer, more sustainable chemistry, and chemical footprinting.

To advance the Global Framework on Chemicals, engage in:

  • Chemical footprint reductions by joining CPA’s BizNGO Chemicals Management Work Group by filling in the form at https://www.bizngo.org/get-involved/join-bizngo and checking the Chemical Management Work Group.
  • Financing the transition to safer, more sustainable chemistries by joining IEHN.
  • Overall implementation of the Global Framework on Chemicals by joining CPA’s BizNGO Public Policy Work Group by filling in the form at https://www.bizngo.org/get-involved/join-bizngo and checking the Public Policy Work Group.

“Critically the Global Framework on Chemicals prioritizes prevention as the most effective and efficient pathway for addressing the adverse effects of toxic chemicals on biodiversity loss, climate change, plastic pollution, and human health. Clean Production Action (CPA) looks forward to partnering with the financial sector and end users of chemicals to achieve the global targets set in the UN’s Global Framework on Chemicals,” said Mark S. Rossi, PhD, Executive Director of CPA.
